Do you have a passion to mentor young people? Do you Love old timber boats ? And can you join us at Woolwich Dock?
Then this project could be for you!
An exciting new program is soon to be launched by SWD called the Wright of Passage and we need to recruit more volunteers to help in the delivery of this program's success which will include the mentoring of young people.
Most importantly these NEW volunteers will have a passion to share the dream, to engage with and co work with young people - helping to build self esteem and confidence.
Secondly, ideally our NEW volunteers would have some trade/specialist skills – however it is not limited or defined by their skills. Lots of people with the right attitude can drive a paint brush and use sandpaper! And if you have a love of boats especially wood, you could be just what we need!
About the opportunity
Passionate volunteers are needed to participate in SWD’s newest initiative ‘Wright of Passage’. The project encompasses returning a donated 52’ timber ketch to its former glory in time for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival to be held in Tasmania in early 2019. The boat is currently moored at Woolwich Dock in Sydney and will be sailed to Hobart for the festival by the program’s participants.
A key focus of the program is the vocational and personal development of a small group of young Australians who will study at TAFE and, while working with a professional boat builder, and participate in the restoration of the ‘Mercator’. But they can’t do it alone.
