The SWD Board is commencing planning for the 2013 Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The 2013 Hobart will be conducted using Kayle and will be entered in to the PHS Division. The emphasis will be on disabled sailing we would like to have a minimum 50% of the crew with a disability.
Interested Members are encouraged to sail the Winter Series as an indication of their willingness to participate in the 2013 Sydney to Hobart.
As the mornings start to get a little cooler, it is still a great time for sailing and we have lots happening now and in preparation for the months ahead.
Our volunteer crew have continued to man the boats every week during summer through the Try Sail Days and Winds of Change, we are always getting great feedback. From the entire SWD Board we say a sincere thank you for your continued efforts, we could not do it without you and for your ongoing generosity we are very grateful.
Gordon you are the man, solid as they come pulling together crew every week and fostering a wonderful team, thank you.
We have now officially welcomed Xylem as a Corporate Partner of SWD. Xylem has FIVE market leading brands, each delivering innovative and effective solutions. This makes Xylem Australia's premier provider of all water and wastewater solutions. Xylem products can be found worldwide, transporting liquid in hundreds of different operations. Whether it's transporting drinking water to the 50th floor of a skyscraper or drainage water up mine shaft, Flygt, Godwin, Leopold, Sanitaire and Wedeco can handle it.
SWD are looking forward to a long partnership with Xylem and as part of this agreement SWD are proud to have Xylem on board as one of our major supporters in the upcoming 2013 Hobart campaign.
On Thursday 4 July the team will depart for the Northern Campaign, over 8 weeks the team will offer our Try Sail Programme to kids and adults with a disability from Southport, Bundaberg, Mackay, Gladstone, Coffs Harbour and Newcastle.
We desperately need more volunteer crew, if you are interested in leaving Sydney for the warmer weather or joining the team for part of the journey, click here to Volunteer to Crew through the SWD Calendar or email Lucy Reid for details – firstname.lastname@example.org
Due to unforeseen circumstances Lucia Lee has left SWD, we wish her well. This has allowed us to review our current structure and we are calling for registrations of interest to the following volunteer positions:
If you would like to discuss the above roles or you would like to get involved in something else, we encourage you to say I Can, just email email@example.com with your details and a short introductory letter including what you would like to help with and we will call you to discuss further.
One volunteer, Graham Clarke, recently discussed with David Pescud the suitability of the name “Try Sail Day”, Graham laid the following challenge and we are opening it to our Members for suggestions. The best suggestion wins a case of Brokenwood wine, entries close Friday 10 May 2013.
“Try Sailing Days implies that we take people who are new to the sport and give them the opportunity to try sailing. What we do is so very far removed from this interpretation.
“We have a fantastic group of volunteers, who happily give their time to take parents, carers, children and adults who are affected by all levels of physical and mental disabilities, and treat them to an experience they might not otherwise for many reasons, have the time, resources or opportunity to enjoy. A day sailing or cruising around Sydney Harbour takes these kids and adults away from what must be a hideous daily routine and surely must put a little joy into their lives. Even if it is for a very short time. I guarantee it also offers parents and carers a little respite from the norm. And all that is provided is free of charge. This is what potential supporters need to be told.
“...Ideally it would be a simple, short catchy name which would in part describe what we do. More importantly it would hopefully invite discussion on what we do in more detail.” Thanks Graham.
To enter send your name suggestions and any free ideas to launch the new name to firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday 10 May 2013.
